My career in transportation started when I was still an undergraduate engineering student at Louisiana State University, working as an intern at a large consulting firm. I witnessed construction of a cable stayed bridge across the Mississippi River, but learned that structural engineering and corporate companies were not my thing. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, I started producing traffic impacts studies and interchange justification reports for a local consulting firm in Baton Rouge. I was pleased to participate in Louisiana Speaks workshops that were held after Hurricane Katrina which aimed to form a program of projects for coastal restoration. Soon I realized that working for a public agency would enhance my ability to impact policy and make a bigger difference in the industry. Once I landed at LADOTD, I assisted the State Traffic Engineer in revising the state's traffic impact policy and pavement marking standards.
Later, I fully engaged in the data-driven analysis of crash, traffic, and roadway data. My involvement with NCHRP projects, TRB committees, AASHTO's Committee on Safety, and AASHTO’s Task Force for the second edition of the Highway Safety Manual increased my knowledge to improve policies and procedures. We developed a Data-Driven Safety Analysis Implementation Plan through a collaborative effort with FHWA and a Complete Streets Implementation Plan in collaboration with Louisiana's Complete Streets Advisory Council. I know from experience that culture eats policy for breakfast! Careful intention and sustained effort is required for procedures to catch up to new policy changes.
Some of my favorite recent projects include East Baton Rouge Parish's Bicycle and Pedestrian Masterplan, the development of MOVEBR's Design Guidelines and Project Prioritization Process, Government Street Road Diet project, MOVEBR's Scenic Highway Enhancement project, and the Town of St. Francisville's Commerce Betterment Project which is still in preliminary phases. My goal as a small business owner is to assist small and rural communities with accessing federal funds to build their complete streets networks. I also hope that as Grey grows, I can create a workplace culture that is inclusive, modern, and balanced. Our time is the most precious gift and we must choose how to use it carefully.
